This game worried me as soon as I pulled into the park and saw Chris Hinkle laughing it up with some friends...without a beer in his hand! When the game started and I didnt see any cases (or even a 12-pack) of Bud near his belongings I knew we might be in trouble. And so it was: a sober, mellowed Hinkle--who too many times dashed the hopes of Denim with a variety of well-placed backhand and forehand bombs that connected with anyone capable of catching a disc dangling, waist high, right in front of them. All I could do is tip my cap and say, Lightweight! Navy got off to a 4-0 start before Denim could hold on to a pass in the endzone. That slippery disc continued to be elusive to our team for the rest of the game, but Denim stayed in it with their un-WL-like ability to play hard. And I mean HARD! Perhaps it was because of the rain-softened ground or their absorbent youth but I cannot remember a team getting horizontal more often than Denim did on Saturday. Navy took half, 9-5, and both teams continued to grind it out after intermission. Denim finally got their offense broken in and took the lead, 10-11. After a few long, grueling points Navy righted their ship, demonstrated their efficiency and sunk the faded Denim team (hey, this is easy!). Congrats to both teams for playing hard and with a lot of spirit. Several players distinguished themselves for Navy: the aforementioned man now on the wagon, Scooter (who repeatedly broke me), and Navys lesser known players, who really stepped forward and caught a lot of discs, which provided the difference in the end. For Denim, the whole team distinguished itself with its hard play and willingness to compete for every disc. Im confident both teams will win a lot of games this year.
In a game that had far better heckling than play, Navy beat Denim 16-14. Both teams had a good showing of players and the beginner players on both teams played well but were often missed on great cuts by the throwers. I would like to blame the cold and rain for some particularly poorly thrown hammers but it probably had little to do with it. A bright note for Denim is that Daran showed why he is a true number 1 draft pick. (Sorry Daran I couldn't resist.) It was a close game with good spirit and great heckling. I am not sure you can ask for more on the first week other than warm dry weather.
