First game of the season and it already seemed like a January game --- close and cold. P and Z women's captains Beth and Becca, minus their male co-captains Rodning and Slater, battled it out in a long game. Z was hurting for people as their women out numbered their men 4 to 2, but they got the aid of 3 willing, skilled male players. P had some good numbers and was ready to play! The game started off pretty close traing points up until about 5's. Z found their flow and took half at 9-5. P refocused during half-time and came back strong in the 4th quarter. P had an incredible comeback to win 17-16...highlighted by Dave 'my ACL rehab won't hold be back' Sims' throws and layouts, newbie Stalker's grabs and D, Trexler's D's and reading/catches, John Stephens anchor handling and team support, Steve Frame's handling and down field catches, Martha's dump/continue passes, Hart's tireless D and long throws, Christopher's tight marks, Wesley's speed and throws despite 5 layers of clothes, Tom's high concentration catches for scores, and Lisa's warm wool sweater, no wait, her tight D and flawless passing. Good game Z...playing 4/3 many points when we could not match with only 3 women. Z's Claudia played a great game while being guarded by some P guys. And perhaps 'BK' wasn't such a snag after all :) Good game all...
Whew! It was two o'clock and Metro Blue had four women and two guys on our line . . . and then . . . by the grace of the deities, our esteemed opponent agreed to let us pick up a few players just so we could play! She agreed to Garrett and Mike Kelly, which I thought was very generous and then Roger Lassiter offered his skills and we knew we were pushing our luck, but Beth (thank you Beth) must have really wanted a competitive game - agreed to let us pick up all three! The rain started, the wind blew - Metro Blue held the lead for quite a few points, we lost one woman, then took the half with one sub! Claudia Barrett was the amazing handler/mid/long that she always is - she played D on a guy most of the time and made some great blocks! Mary Frazer played like crazy - I think that she was off the field for only one point the whole second half! Rodney Guajardo played savage and had some beautiful throws/cuts/catches, Rick Ragland was forced to get horizontal so many times we were all starting to feel a little bad for him - but he scooped up some real trash for much needed points. Our three pickups were amazing - although I think Beth's goading Mike Kelly only drove him harder - but maybe that was the plan? The second half proved to be just a little more than anyone wanted to play, with only one sub, and it being Garrett and Roger's third game of the day, Steel Blue came together and brought it back to win 17-16. Roger, Mike, and Garrett - any beverage you want anytime, will be gladly provided in gratitude!
