the day started out cold and windy, and really bad for sand. after last week's resounding victory with only 7 people, sand was a bit disappointed with its performance in the first half. this week much of the team showed up for the game, so we had plenty of subs, but this was really the first time we all played together so it took us a while to get in a groove. all i can say is that the first half went very fast with royal having some awesome play and offense (rick from royal was killing us with his CRAZY HOT grabs), royal taking it 9-2. after a half-time pep talk and pointers to some of the newer players, sand came out strong in the second half. we started playing zone and discovered that it worked very well for us, the cup forcing many turnovers. royal tried to do the same to us, but quickly discovered it's hard to stop the razor-sharp handling skills of jp and marc, and the hot popping by sean and jeff. royal went back to man. the tentativeness that sand had shown in the first half was now gone and was replaced with hard d (john kim got his GROOVE back) and some nice offensive flow by veterans and rookies alike. the duke and unc players finally stepped up and started playing their game and some hot ultimate. unfortunately, it was too little too late as we were not able to make up the gigantic deficit we had acquired in the first half and royal ended up winning 17-13.
