Missing our beloved captains, Steel falls to Charcoal

Submitted by: Hart Steel on 2/16/2001 at 1:30:25 PM

The Steel Wheels had a great start and a great finish this weekend, but we seemed to be missing the filling to make a successful sandwich. Steel came into this game light-handed. We had known we would be missing Capt. Cates, who was AWOL in the mountains for the weekend. But because of the change from Saturday to Sunday, we were also missing Capt. Rodning, who had an interview to conduct. We hoped to strengthen our side with the pickup of Beth's Spear teammate Marcie Wily, approved earlier in the week by the Charcoal captain, but when Charcoal's women turned out barely quorable, our hopes were dashed. With only two women of their own, Charcoal was able to keep our substitute marinading for the first six points. Capt. Roessler had agreed to let her play the first half with us, and then we would reassess her status at the half. Steel came out strong, capitalizing on energetic D and a couple of mistakes to take a 3-1 lead. But when the score reached 3-3, the opposing captain let us know that Marcie should sit unless we didn't mind her playing for Charcoal in the second half. A team picking up a female player must have at least one less woman than their opponent, or else the opposing team can yank her at any time. Unfortunately, Marcie isn't playing Winter League, and she had made a special trip to Morrisville to play only four points. We could hardly face a second half against Marcie AND Amy Seagroves, so Marcie packed up her stuff while Steel packed up its stuff for the next six points, every one of which was scored by Charcoal. After a frustrated and disheartening halftime, the savage Steel women and their escorts fought back with all they had, actually outscoring Charcoal in the second half to lose 12-17. Despite their lack of subs, the Steel women were everywhere, with Martha constantly getting open and Lauren making great fadeaway cuts and catching several endzone hammers. Steve, Shepard, Wes and John played a consistent handle, while Jon, Ross, Baker and Tom assisted and pulled out great D's. Many thanks to our heartful women, and MANY THANKS TO MARCIE WILY FROM THE STEEL WHEELS. Happy Valentine's Day!
