2003-04 Winter League Spirit Winners

Bad News Berries - Stefan Gottschalk

Stefan attended nearly every game this year and was a constant inspiration to his teammates. He helped with strategy and instruction, all the time shredding defenses with his deadly breakmark backhand. His first spirit award, TFDA should be proud to have players like Stefan around. Ladies, Stefan is single.

Captains Kris Bass & Marcie Wily

Big Bird - Kevin Schumacker

He plays hard. Doesn't spew trite ultimate dogma . Keeps it positive. Keeps getting better . Go Jordan!

Captains Jeff Faulkner & Denice Cunningham

Chicken Fried Jake - Joe Kinnarney

Joe exemplified the spirit of the game throughout the season through his positive demeanor, his competitive intensity, his honorable play, his desire to learn, and most of all through his pure love of the game. The intangibles that Joe brought were a key part of what made our team so much fun.

Captains Jacob Bonenberger, Steve Hall & Josh Nadel

Chili Con D - Fred and Jeremy Medlin

Fred and Jeremy are a father/son combo who came to nearly every game. They did not get to play much on our high attendance team, but they never complained and always cheered us on. When they did play, they gave it their all every single point, and always walked off the field smiling. A lot of very experienced players could learn from the Medlin Spirit!

Katy Harris & Troy Revell

liME - Jen Hsieh & David Becker

Jen played solid for us the entire season and always came up with a great play. She toughed it out during quarters and finals playing savage still giving it her all. She had great O and D plays during the tournament. Dave really stepped it up during the tournament and filled any role we needed: handle, long, cup, deep. He played solid for us all season, but when the tourney came, he was able to give the team more.

Captains Beth Cates & Chris Hinkle

Ninjas - Devin Connelly

Despite being at almost every game, not once was he seen looking frustrated during bad points. Always focused on playing his best(which was very solid), he came up with some great plays at crucial times. He provided a quiet positive attitude that other teams might not have noticed but it was certainly recognized by his teammates. Devin is a model mammal that all ninjas aspire to be.

Captain Jesse Overby

Old English Malt Liquor - Clark Goldentyer & Kevin Gross

Clark is a rising frisbee star. He plays with a lot of heart. Every time he's in the game he runs hard and makes a positive impact. He scored a lot of points for us this season!

Kevin Gross - Kevin came to almost every game this season. He has a great attitude and is always smiling. He is an excellent receiver - always coming through with some ridiculous catch. His popping skills were key in the tournament. It was great to have him on the team!

Captains Tracey Cate, Lesley McCormack, & Brian Lang

Poison Arrow Frog - Tom Herndon

Tom Herndon wore the blazing orange beacon of the Poison Arrow Frogs (Team I) proudly week in and week out this Winter League season. Always happy to chase in the cup, spread the D with dashing cuts long, or provide a steadying influence as a solid handler, Tom's surprise appearance at the tournament carried the Frogs to the brink of elimination play.

Captains Mike Soo & Daniel Olstein

Post-It - Heather Gardner

Heather came to almost every game of the season and was asked to play savage, in some cases solo, in at least half of them. Through it all, she exhibited a very positive, uplifting attitude while maintaining a very high level of play.

Captain Kenn Davis

Red Stripe - Beth Archie

This was Beth's first season and she showed up for almost every game, gaining skills and field sense as the season progressed. Beth's homework for next year is to learn how to heckle other players.

Captain Tom Lyndes

Simply Red - Dave Des Marais

The captains had a difficult time determining who would win our team's award. We agreed that nearly everyone played very determined ultimate in a mostly positive manner, and had a laugh or two while doing it. What more can you ask out of a team? We threw around a number of names, justifying each, but then settled on Super Dave Des Marais. Dave deserves this award because he elevated his play the most from start to finish. He was one of those guys that left the opponents shaking their heads after a big play. There were many times in the tournament, in particular, where Dave came up with a big play that gave us that extra little push that we needed at the time. It's always great to have positive mojo going for your team, and Dave was a big factor in bringing it. Simply Red congratulates Super Dave on a great season of ultimate and all hope to play on his team again in the future.

Captains Garrett Dyer & Daran Edmonds

Skidmark - Patrick Hall, Rich Mason, & Geoff Bell

To Patrick Hall, who came out to play the first half on the saturday of his wedding. He was late to the wedding. His brother, Dennis, the best man, played as well. Although that shows dedication, they would have been REALLY dedicated if they had played the whole game and been really late. To Rich Mason, who played every game with spirit, brought spirits to every game to drink, and was always there--even in the most inclement weather. To Geoff Bell for all around spirit, good karma and good play. And we gave the Spirits award (a bottle of wine) to Mel and Jon Proctor for their spirited play. They have so many discs already...

Captains Becca Carchman & Leslie Frost

Sparky - Dev Nain

He was new to to game and had to play a number of savage games during the season. He knew his limits and always tried to improve to help the team out. He spent time during the season learning the game and near the end of the season started to make very impressive cuts to the disc.

Captains Sam Boyarsky & John Kim

Stuff - Sean Gleason and Nick Stefanski

Stuff awarded our spirit disc to a player who was always encouraging on the field, on the line, and heck even online. Sean Gleason never failed to give Stuff positive banter, followed up with ever burnin cuts and catches. Sean truly spirited Stuff to a fun season, Thanks Sean. Nick Stefanski's first winter league season was most impressive, he played hard, he played smart and has rapidly become a defender to contend with and a steady receiver, keep at Nick.

Captains Anne Burroughs & Jason Bivins

Tarts - Mike Moore

Mike was a huge part of our team's overall success and enjoyment this season. He was there every week, playing his hardest, and of course, at an extremely high level. He helped a lot of newer players improve their games and also came up with some of the defensive schemes that we used all season. He is both a spirited MVP and an MVP of spirit.

Captain Adam Silberstein

The Red Pill- Scott "He's Got Something" Scheibner

With his "big man yell" and exuberant enthusiasm, Scott was an invaluable addition to the team. He never lost his smile, played every point as if it were game point on both D and O, and could always be heard cheering when he was on the sideline.

Captains Judi Rourke-O'Briant & Heidi Porter

Twisted Lime - Michelle Duval & Ralph Franklin

Michelle came out every week with a great attitude and gave 100% effort, epitomizing what winter league is about. She also brought Makers Mark to every game. Ralph Franklin also had a great attitude and gave great effort. Beyond playing, he brought back from Africa tie-dye shirts for the whole team and supplied us with some much needed Juju by bringing out his African Idols. And despite not being able to attend the tourney, he contributed handsomely to the beer fund.

Captains Tim Lupo & Bobby Veit

UPS (Ultimate Playing S**t) - Adrian Duehl & Stepan Paul

Captain BJ Witkin

Who's Your Poppy? - Paul Weeks, Colleen Connearney & Paul Klenk

We plugged in Paul Weeks at every position without hesitation, and he delivered. The amazing part is, the kid is a high school sophomore. Paul displays exceptional maturity on the field and has enormous potential -- so hopefully we didn't screw him up too much.

Colleen Connearney showed up practically every week, playing sick and savage and sometimes both. She ran long, she handled, she ran cup and did everything that was asked of her, all with a positive attitude. She also finished a close second to Patrick McNally for the Most Authentic Irish Name award.

Special recognition also has to go to Paul Klenk, who broke a finger two weeks before the tournament but played every pool game anyway, making dozens of one-handed catches. Whether at 100% or not, Paul goes all out on every play, and, more importantly, his zeal rubs off on his teammates. At least, I think that's what we had all over us.

Captains Dwayne Purper & Thomas Reid

Yuengling - Phil Piper

Phil made it to just about every single game, and he always showed up ready to learn, run hard and contribute to the team. He never complained when we ALWAYS lined him up against the fastest guy across the line, he never whined about all the long throws we made him chase after, most of which he caught, and most importantly, he put up with Jolley's grumpy attitude like a champ :-) Phil is a great player and really made a difference to our team, along with many others who we unfortunately could not recognize here.

Captains Thuy & Tim Brooks
