18 - Adrianne Soo Ironically, 18's spirit award winner isn't even 18. We could have selected a few for this spirit award, but one player out shined the rest. Playing with a skill and maturity beyond her years, she gave our team all her effort, focus and energy. Whether it was scoring by Callahan, getting knocked around by the guys or catching countless hammers, Adrianne Soo played with great spirit, determination and aggressiveness. Captains Chris Hinkle & Beth Cates Admiral Seals - Andy Ivory Andy, like a number of deserving players on our team, stood out for his great play on offense and defense, enthusiasm, and attendance. What put him over the top was his willingness to put his body on the line for us, beginning in an early game when he went all out to run down a huck in the endzone, knowing he would then crash into the fence on the cage match field. All season, he made a ton of hard layouts on offense and defense, often on frozen ground. More than a few times he had to take injury subs from getting the wind knocked out of him, but was always back in the game a few minutes later. Captain Adam Silberstein BANK - Danny Jeck, BJ Witkin, and Brian Steffen We actually had a three way tie, so here they are (in no particular order)- Danny Jeck - Was a fixture of BANK's regular season and tournament schedule. He came to nearly every game (if not every, my memory is not so great) and played with enthuisiasm, no matter what the score might be. He made it clear he loved to be out there playing, and never uttered a cross word to his teammate or opponent. He really stepped up his offensive game during the tournament, and was critical to helping BANK's flow by getting open repeatedly on in-cuts when we needed him. BJ - Almost a shoe-in from day one. He's well known for bringing delicious baked goods to every game, and freely shares with both teams (and teams nearby as well). On the field he is a dependable player, and often picks up the slack to help his teammates out. As the season progressed BJ also helped more on the strategy side of the game, talking during the pep-talks, and generally being a very positive and enthusiastic voice. Unfortunately during the tournament he got injured, but played through it all the way to the finals. Brian Steffen - The darkhorse of team BANK, he quickly showed that he was ready to throw the throws and sky the skies, and was a huge factor on the team as the season progressed. Best of all, he did it with little flash, he simply got the job done on the field. He's the kind of player I always hope to play with, and he really did this team proud. Like BJ, he got injured during the tournament, but showed the same BANK grit and played through it. All three of these gentlemen are well-deserved spirit-disc winners. Captains Jeff Loperfido & Baker Pratt birthdaypartycheesecakejellybeanboom - Scott Scheibner Scott was all over the field all season long, making cuts out of the stack, bailing out throwers on 9-counts, timing his deep cuts nicely and making big and small plays on defense. Far more important, however: Scott was the first to recognize the source of our team name. Recognition also has to go to Courtney Bethem, who commuted to our games from Texas! Captains Dwayne Purper & Tom Reid Bleach - Karen Powers Our youngest and shortest team member Katy Powers made almost every game on time and was a welcome sight, because we were almost always short women at game time. Her field work was solid, she was open a lot, managed to get off some impressively precise throws while being heavily defended. She was also not ever easily broken on D, and was amazingly cool under pressure. We believe that Katy Powers has a bright future in the game. Captains Tom Lyndes, Karen Maguylo & Julie DeMeester Bling Bling - David DeWeese The Bling Bling Spirit Disc went to David DeWeese, who started the season with no cleats and ended it with cleats, cuts and a tournament score. David took every opportunity at games to ask questions and practice his throws and talk about what was going on on the field. His attendance was nearly perfect and his improvement was visible from game to game. Congratulations, David! Captain Hart Matthews Blue Steel - Scott Moyer In a team whose record and spirit level were inversely proportional, Scott Moyer stood out as the most spirited of the lot. Though relatively new to the game, his good cheer was unmatched. He was always ready to play, and every point he ran like there was no tomorrow. He was always chipper, never getting down on his teammates or opponents. Above all, he was really, really, ridiculously good looking. Runner up was Heather Gardner of the triple bookend who's enthusiasm and spunk exceeded that of a kitten in a room full of leaky cows. Captains Evie Boswell-Vilt & Rich Gurley Cheap Date - Charliss Fenton It was difficult to choose just one out of a team of exceptionally good-spirited players, and there were several on Cheap Date worthy of the spirit disc. Charliss attended nearly every game, even playing savage on occasion. She was one of our youngest players, but demonstrated maturity in skills and attitude beyond her years. She was a reliable player, and consistently showed improvement throughout the season. Thanks for being a great teammate, and congratulations Charliss! Captains John Kim & Mike Riley Clockwork - Wes Hunt & Sara Plentl Wes was cheerful, skilled, aggressive, supportive .... Sarah Plentl
"when every she was on the field she elevated our level of play" Captain Dave Kaminski Duet Tuet - Karen & Doug Creviston Ours went to Karen (66%) and Doug (33%) Creviston for being there most weeks and Karen for playing savage for several games. Doug was a beginner and played hard all year. Captain Joe "Papa Disc" Slater Fever - Phil Piper Normally picking one player out a team of such great individuals would be tough, however Phil Piper was the easy choice to receive Fever's Spirit Disc this year. Phil always displayed great spirit on the field, while stepping up his play to become a solid handler for us this year. In addition, Phil was one of our most dedicated players, even sacrificing his car in an attempt to make it to a game in icy conditions. Captains Dan Olstein & Blair Holloway Grave Error - Kenn Davis Grave Error chose Kenn Davis as its spirit winner. Kenn made almost every game, brought a great attitude, and put his body on the line with multiple layouts. I know this isn't his first spirit disc and I'm sure it won't be his last. Captains Jake Bonenberger & Steve Hall
Captains Becca Carchman & Leslie Frost Pootie Tang - Ben Cerone, Ken Mitchell, and Paul Weeks Pootie Tang was lucky enough to have three worthy candidates for our spirit award. Since we couldn't in good conscience eliminate any of them, we gave out three spirit discs (though of course not all of them were the officially shiny kind). Each of these players showed up nearly every week, played with exceptional energy and enthusiasm, kept it cool and inspired the rest of us. Pootie's main daimies are Ben Cerone, Ken Mitchell, and Paul Weeks. Captains Anne Burroughs & Jason Bivins Red Rum - Andrew Phillips Without being blessed with some of the throws that his teammates had, Andrew always wanted to play his best, and was very concerned about how he could be a better player for our team. He was a great receiver who seemed to be open in the end zone more than anyone else. You would always see Andrew both on the field on and off with a smile on his face, sweat on his brow, and catching his breath from running so hard. It was a pleasure having Andrew on our team this year, and we hope to see him again in a league coming soon to a field near you. Captain Garrett Dyer Royal Jelly - Sarah Hodges Despite a seaon-long shortage for ladies, Sarah was there to start every game, rain, sleet, or er, flurries. Even though she is a bit on the quiet side, she played hard and always had a smile. Thank you Sarah. Captains Mick Styers & Joe Kinnarney Sex Appeal - Sri Nagasubramanian Known to many as "Big" Sri, Sri's play was big all season for Sex Appeal. Sri was always willing to do the dirty work when no one else would step up, whether that involved running in the cup or guarding one of the top players on opposing teams. He even took an injured player to the hospital during one of our games. Sri is a class act! Captain Natalie Dale & Amy Morrison Where's Timur? - Kevin Shumaker For always playing great, for keeping it cooler under pressure than his captain does (despite being 10 years younger), for apparently funneling all his angst through Mikey O'Malley, for the D-of-the-season (layout Callahan!), and for nearly perfect attendance. Captains Troy Revell & Katy Harris WTF - Dave Des Marais Dave is the stealthy, tall, speedy guy who would mark up against the best in league and make a positive impact on O and D. He's laid back and always a pleasure to play with. He only missed one game this season which is quite an accomplishment considering our 1-9 finish (3-11 post tourney - wtf?). Honorable mention also goes to Brian Svihovec who has a great attitude and was always smiling while making a run through D! Captains Brian Lang & Tracey Cate your name here - Joelle Burleson When we needed spirit, Joelle Burleson was there for our team. Joelle was always there, often our sole woman, many a cold 10:00 am ready to go. Her efforts were greatly appreciated and not overlooked for all those savage seven games and her tireless efforts and endurance helping us hacks have some style, thank you. Captain Stephen Sheslow
