Kool-Aid - Jay Guise Jay was a welcome sight each week on a team wracked with injury, schedule conflicts, and lack of desire to travel to Lake Benson. Counting on Jay to be there extended to his play on the field as well, as he indeed was always there when you needed him. Strong cuts and amazingly precise inside-out throws characterized Jay's game. Captain Tom Lyndes White Noise - Rachel Hodges and Evan Harris Both of our young stars played with enthusiasm, great spirit, and a sheer love of being out in the freezing cold on a Saturday. Both had near perfect attendance and could always be counted on when the numbers were tight. We considered ourselves lucky to get to hang out with such great people, let alone play ultimate with them. Captains Joseph Kinnarney and Mick Styers The Yeti Attack! - Phil Prudich For his tireless, MVP-caliber play and talent for firing the team up when spirits were lagging. He was truly the fiercest Yeti! Honorable mention goes to Joshua Murphy (the new JM) for his crazy lay-out D's and 20-ft deflection pass into the endzone for maybe the coolest (though illegal) score ever. Captain Rocky Payne
Hubris - Mimi Phan and Allan Ellis Mimi Phan received a spirit disc for high attendance and even higher motivational energy for the team, regardless of the score or temperature. Allan Ellis received a spirit disc for incredible and quiet dedication to the game and a willingness to take feedback in many forms and incorporating that into his style of play. Captains Jacob Bonenberger and Dan Parrish
Robot Lords of Tokyo - Marty Newman Despite a grim record, the RLOTs had a wonderfully spirited roster. With so many worthy candidates, we decided to award the spirit disc to Robot who came up biggest at the Tourney: Marty Newman. With 1 male sub by the end of the day, and a roster ravaged by injury and illness, Marty played hard and played well right up to the last point. He was also most spirited throughout (although he cannot take credit for the Nipple Tape discourse). Captains Jason Bivins and Anne Burroughs
Cradle - Joe Wolhar Joe played savage most of the season and became a key contributor to our team. His attitude was always a pleasure to be around and he made captaining a real pleasure. We also gave two additional 'spirit' awards in the form of bar tabs to Josh and Enver for consistent bodily destruction above and beyond the call of duty. Captains Robbie Minshall and Lindsey Hack
Hired Goons - Billy Sweet and Sara Stanley Both give 100% on every play, are incredible teammates, and dominate their opponents with a never-ending smile. Our tournament MVP disc went to David Beller. He played like Napoleon at a Short People Joke Convention. His intensity, consistency, and effort always lifted the team, and would've made Coach Mark Grow beam like a proud father. Captains Tim Lupo and Bobby Veit
Sand - Erik Jolles Erik was a new face to all of us but quickly became a frequently used name. He filled a number of positions for us throughout the season many of which were new to him as well. He quietly accepted any challenge we asked of him with his calm, casual enthusiasm...be it guarding someone with +6" on him or tirelessly running point in the zone cup. It was a pleasure to have him on the team. Captains Beth Stagner and Chris Hinkle
Smokewagon - Michelle Reader Michelle received the spirit disc because she never spoke a disparaging word and always exhibited spirited enthusiasm. She showed up every weekend ready to play with a smile on her face. Captains Eric Kirkham and Jeff Loperfido
Toast - Kelly Weeks Kelly was a force on the field with solid all-around play. We knew we could count on her to be there every week, and every week she played as hard as anyone on the team. She never complained when she had to play savage, nor did she take any guff from opponents, despite her relative youth. Thank you, Kelly. Captains Clay Thomas and Baker Pratt
Rubber Red - Taylor Pope and Kari Boshoff Taylor not only inspired the Rubbers with his incredible play on the field, but he was also our motivational leader or "zen master" in team huddles. He helped keep Rubber Red positive, focused, and fun. Kari displayed top spirit and tough play all season for Red. Her game saving (and tournament saving) layout D versus Toast during pool play was a great example of her heart, skill, and determination. Segev Phillips also received an award for being the most improved player on RR this season. Segev made some great endzone grabs, became an excellent popper against the zone, and was always willing to layout on O or D to make the play. Captains Amy Morrison and Bryan Steffen
Blue Toxic Popsicle - Sharon and Eli Sharon and Eli
Duckies - James "Lefty" Laborde On a team plagued by injuries and regular season no-shows, Lefty stood out by attending almost every weekend game that didn't conflict with a college tournament. And for that, "Mr. Come In the Rain and the Cold When The Team Is Bound To Get Slaughtered And Still Bring Beer" we salute you. Captains Charles Kerr and Aaron Quirk
Deep Dish - Chris Pua Dish had several players who made significant contributions, but Chris played everywhere and did all the little things that helped his team -- handling against the zone, cutting deep for the score, running in the cup. Chris always makes the catch, always makes the right throw and never stops running. Captains Dwayne Purper, Tom Reid, and Mike Riley
Grey Goose - Lauren Gardner Lauren played hard every point (frequently savage) and never complained about the swill we frequently threw to her. Plus she showed up for almost all the games even with all the field and day changes this year. She helped make this a fun year. Thanks Lauren! Go Goose! Captains Matt Burleson and Dennis Nield
Hefty - Michelle Duval and Dave Des Marais Michelle Duval for her tireless positive attitude, being a true team player, putting up with Victor all season, and most importantly for always bringing the booze! Dave Des Marais for being an incredible team oriented player, never complaining about Victor, and for his sick layout grab in the quarters on Sunday! Honorable mention to Angella Rinehold who couldn't play due to an injury but cheered us on from the sidelines for the entire tourney. Captains Tracy Cate and Sarah Plentl
Sandbox - Meg Kassabaum Meg was a positive force for our team throughout the season. She came to most every game where played hard, she sacrificed playing time unselfishly, and she always had a smile on her face....she was also an ace at catching everyone's swilly throws! Captains Thuy Brooks and Linda Zier
Screaming Blue Meanies - Rob Grau After a lot of consideration (I know...SHOCKER), I had already resolved to award the disc to someone else, and had planned to name Rob as the honorable mention. But when I arrived at the fields at 9:00, I soon realized that if I was going to give the award to someone else, there were going to be a lot of things to look past. Rob was already there and had a brand new tent set up with a folding table under it. On the table were Sam's Club sized boxes of two types of granola bars, Rice Krispie treats, an extra large packet of beef jerky, oranges, bananas, pickles...and I'll bet that I'm forgetting something. After I dragged my cooler with 5 cans of Budweiser and 3 sugar-free Red Bulls over to our sideline, Rob asked if I could help him bring out the cooler. Sure thing. In the back of Rob's van was an extra-large cooler that was completely full of *good* beer and at least 24 bottles of Gatorade. At the end of the day, I think every one of those bottles of Gatorade remained - but not a single beer was to be had - and there was little doubt that Rob Grau was the MVP of our team. Congratulations (and thank you!) Rob Captain Garrett Dyer
Jolly Green Giants - Mary Frazer In a long season of schedule snafus, inconsistent weather, low attendance, and gruff captains, one player stood tall above the fray. She came to nearly all games, frequently played savage, and throughout remained consistently merry. Appropriately, she is in fact named - Mary Frazer. Captains Troy Revell and Katy Harris
OOPS - Tom Schopler Tom Schopler was the epitome of good spirit all season, always positive and encouraging and impactful in his encouragements. Injured and unable to play for most of the season, he still came to games and helped the team with his presence; simply a great teammate. Captains Katherine Bliss and Augie Kreivenas Parrish/Goodrich - Rich Bolen and Carl Erikson They are both just classy players, great attitudes, made most of the games, and just dominated in the endzone. Captains Frannie Goodrich and Ray Parrish Steve McQueen Motorcycle Gang - Sophie Lehman, Ed Miga, and Ben Parees While rivals would think this excessive, this is actually the properly-sized contingent to man a large motorcycle and sidecar. All three made great plays all season and had great attitudes. Sophie was constantly open on her cuts against both man and zone, Ed became a great cutter, and Ben was not only a total beast up high, but had the best layout catch of the season in the entire league. Watch out for these three! They may have won the spirit awards, but they aren't afraid to channel their inner McQueens and go Nevada Smith on you. Captains Adam Silberstein, Rebecca Silberstein, Devin Connelly Work Zone - Kim Sulman and Mark Debenedette In addition to making it to almost all of the games their two daughters made it to some as well. They consistently kept a positive attitude, even as losses loomed, and showed good teamwork and willingness to instruct newer players - and their captain. Captain Mike Nuckols You're In! - Alex Trahey In a tough decision for us captains, Alex was the finalist receiving the spirit disc. He was a consistent player with smart play, a wicked pulling arm, and a smile always on his face. He sealed the deal when he had an amazing tournament, making many big D's and offense grabs for our team. Captains Grant Gardner and Heather Gardner Send updates to |
