Serve on the TFDA Ultiplex Committee

by on Oct 11, 2011 12:00 AM

TFDA Board is seeking individuals to serve on the TFDA Ultiplex Committee!

The board of the Triangle Flying Disc Association invites you to consider serving on a new standing committee dedicated to the development of the nation’s first Ultiplex.

This Ultiplex Committee will work independently of the TFDA board, but will report to that body on a regular basis. To cut to the chase, we need your help!

The Ultiplex is poised to be built, with the land all but secured and the county zoning and planning obstacles already overcome.  The Ultiplex Committee will strategize the next steps involved in the development of the Ultiplex, which will also entail devising means to raise funds at the grassroots, corporate, and State and Federal levels.  Additionally, the Ultiplex Committee may work out ways to partner with USA Ultimate, WAFC, and/or other Ultimate organizations.

What is being sought are several traits and skills, which we do not expect will reside with any single individual. These are:

  1. Construction development experience in order to see the big picture and to coordinate scheduling (of fundraising, construction, and other activities)
  2. Grant writing experience for the purpose of pursuing available public and private funding
  3. Fundraising expertise in order to coordinate grassroots fundraising and other donation-promoting activities
  4. Motivated leadership (to ensure continued proactive enterprise from all involved on this committee)
  5. Accounting/Finance experience to ensure that moneys associated with land ownership and construction are handled professionally to save costs and meet IRS needs

Please contact the TFDA board, if you are willing and able to assist with the further development of our Ultiplex.  Just send an email to:

Announcing LIFETIME memberships

by on Aug 2, 2011 12:00 AM

Are you interested in continuing to support ultimate in our community? Enjoy getting discounts on TFDA events? Want to lock in the extremely low current TFDA membership dues? Then consider a LIFETIME membership with TFDA!

Show the ultimate life-long support for an organization that you care about, and demonstrate your enthusiasm to support the growth of ultimate in the Triangle! Lock in your lifetime membership now at the super low rate of only $250.

Please visit http://www.tfda.org/about-us/join-tfda to join today!

Why is TFDA offering this lifetime opportunity? For 3 reasons:

  • 1. To provide the community with yet another way to support the ultimate sport in our area,
  • 2. To offer an opportunity to lock in extremely low membership rates for a lifetime of savings,
  • 3. To improve TFDA's immediate need for available funds to continue meeting financial obligations associated with the daunting costs incurred with the Ultiplex proposal delays, plan revisions and legal fees.

Revenue from membership dues fund TFDA's programs that do not have a direct revenue stream, including the Ultiplex project to control our own set of fields, offering matching grants to support area youth teams and promotion of college player volunteerism.

With an official membership base, TFDA can represent itself far more effectively with prospective sponsors and donors. The size of our member list can determine the leverage that we have in forming mutually beneficial relationships with others. Please show your support by becoming an official TFDA member!

Only members can be nominated, nominate others or vote in elections for TFDA's board of directors. And don't forget that TFDA Membership entitles you to a 10% discount (or 20% for full-time enrolled students) on registration costs for leagues, hat tournaments, and specially-marked items - typically far more value than the cost of membership!

Ultiplex in the News - Twice!

by on Jul 7, 2011 12:00 AM
Two new articles appeared within two days of each other this week, the first from the Durham Herald Sun, here:
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_story/14559850/article-Frisbee-plan-not-a-catch

Both articles have their merits, but the whole story is still not adequately expressed.  It's my hope that some of us in the community will write about the Ultiplex, because I expect that our opponents will be doing exactly the same.  Both papers accept letters to the editor, with 250 word limits.

Durham Herald Sun has an online submission form, here:
http://www.heraldsun.com/pages/letter_submit

And the Durham News has you send an email version of a letter here:

Currently the Ultiplex is on the Durham County Commissioners' agenda for August 8.  Before that time, please help to make the citizens of Durham better understand how valuable the Ultiplex will be for Durham.

Looking for old stuff? old.tfda.org

Welcome to the Triangle Flying Disc Association’s new worldwide web presence. We are progressing with our site redesign in concurrence with Winter League 2010 registration, but as we continue to make improvements, you will very likely notice that several things are still missing and/or not yet functioning as eventually intended. We do humbly ask for your patience and understanding regarding these to-be-completed items.

Do feel free to email any problems or suggestions to admin at tfda dot org.

You can also access the former site content at http://old.tfda.org

TFDA for the past five years has provided a grant to nationals attending college teams in the form of matching donations up to $2,000 per team. We would now like to expand this program to include area teams that do not qualify for nationals, and we would like to use the program as leverage to encourage volunteer work by college players at the ever expanding youth level. College players will earn volunteer points as they assist with youth events, and at a certain point threshold their team will earn 100% of TFDA’s matching grant for that season regardless of on the field results. Lower point thresholds will earn lower percentages, and the ratios are structured to encourage teams to reach the 100% threshold. There will be a second matching grant when teams qualify for nationals that uses the same percentage, but the dollar amount compared to past years will initially be lower due to the expansion of the program.

For 2010, TFDA will match $500 in donations for all area college teams meeting the highest point threshold, and another $500 for nationals attending college teams meeting the highest point threshold. It is not our intention to create a ton of work for college players, merely to encourage their involvement with the youth scene, so the system initially will not require massive volunteer hours. In the future, if a corporate sponsor or other benefactor can be found to fund the program and increase the dollars matched, then the thresholds will be increased to reflect the opportunity for higher rewards. (Currently the program is funded out of TFDA’s meager operating surplus.)

The following document contains the details of the program:

http://docs.google.com/View?id=d66m4hf_1gw6cszc7

For the general TFDA public, the gist is 1) donate to our college teams to encourage their community involvement (will be part of the website soon) and 2) if anyone has connections/ideas for a sponsor/benefactor that would fund the matching grants and allow this program to grow further, let us know (email board@tfda.org)
